Internal MedicineDr. Kellie Barreto, originally from South Florida, earned her Bachelor of Science degrees from Florida International University and Florida State University before relocating to Scotland to pursue her veterinary training. She received her BVMS from the University of Glasgow School of Veterinary Medicine in 2013.
Following veterinary school, Dr. Barreto completed a one-year rotating internship in small animal medicine and surgery at the Veterinary Emergency Clinic and Referral Center in Toronto, Ontario. She then pursued a one-year specialty internship in small animal internal medicine and critical care at Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists in Houston, Texas. Dr. Barreto went on to complete a three-year residency in small animal internal medicine, beginning at the Animal Specialty Center in Yonkers, New York, and finishing at The Animal Medical Center in
Manhattan, New York. After completing her residency, she passed the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) board-certifying exam in small animal internal medicine.
While Dr. Barreto enjoys all aspects of internal medicine, she has particular interest in immune-mediated hematologic disorders, gastrointestinal and renal disease, endoscopy, and abdominal ultrasonography.
She values working in a collaborative team environment where clinical expertise is shared and thoughtful, practical approaches to treatment are emphasized. Dr. Barreto is deeply committed to maintaining the highest standards of animal welfare and believes in a compassionate, empathetic approach to both patient care and client communication. Her goal is to build strong partnerships with pet owners through shared decision-making, empowering them to take an active role in their pet’s medical care.
Outside of work, Dr. Barreto enjoys exploring the outdoors with her Catahoula, Buster, an adventurous pup she rescued from Georgia through Project Freedom Ride. In her free time, she also enjoys hiking, camping, fishing, kayaking, and photography.
