Canine Blood Drive

Dec. 18, 2018

Just as we need blood donors for lifesaving measures, our pets also rely on donated blood in times of need. There is a national shortage of blood for dogs, and a single donation can save more than one life.

In partnership with Wheat Ridge Animal Hospital, we are hosting a blood donation drive at our hospital in December.

Check out the requirements below and maybe your dog will become a “Blood Donor Hero”.

What: Canine Blood Donation Screening
When: Tuesday, December 18, 2018
Time: Appointments available from 8am-2pm
Where: Veterinary Specialists of the Rockies (774 Maleta Lane, Castle Rock, CO 80108)

Canine Blood Donor Eligibility:

  • 1 – 6 years of age
  • Weight 55 lbs or more
  • Overall good health
  • Friendly disposition
  • Current on required vaccinations
  • Receives monthly heartworm prevention
  • Never received a blood transfusion

To make an appointment to have your dog screened for blood donor eligibility, please contact us at 303.660.1027 or

Note: Your dog will receive an initial blood screening test to determine if they are a favorable donor. Initial blood screening includes extended blood typing, chemistry and CBC, Heartworm test, and an Infectious disease screen.

If your dog qualifies to be a donor, we request that they donate six times annually. We will call and arrange the donations at a convenient time for you. Actual blood donation will take place at a later date.

All donors will receive compensation for participation.
